Tena koutou katoa. Welcome to our school. Westburn School, Te Kura o Hereora is a large decile 9 school situated in the north west of Christchurch. It was established in 1962 and has a proud history. We celebrate being a culturally diverse learning community.
At Westburn, we are committed to, and are very proud to be, a Year 1 to 8 full primary school offering children aged 5 to 13 an excellent academic education and an extensive range of social, sporting and cultural opportunities.
We believe implicitly that Westburn is a community of learners where the partnership between home and school is vital for ensuring our children get the best learning opportunities that are available. We encourage our students to not only develop academically and culturally, but also with independence and as competent self-managers.
Westburn has embraced the exciting challenges offered by the New Zealand Curriculum. This is a place for 21st Century learners. The highly skilled and dedicated staff place emphasis on the core elements of literacy and numeracy, on developing the key competencies, and ensure that all areas of the curriculum are covered and developed for all children.
The school vision is ‘Today’s learners, tomorrow’s leaders’. Our view is that all of our students have the potential to lead in some way in the future, whether it will be in the work place, on the sports field, in a cultural setting or in the community. This is the reason why we provide many opportunities for our students to take on a range of responsibilities, for themselves and for others.
Similarly, our key values are respect / whakamana, excellence / tangata whenuatanga and citizenship / hiranga, all of which are vital for growing up in today’s society. Our values underpin all that we do and aspire to at Westburn.
